2024, serigraph

Through exploring Gabriola Island during an art residency in 2022, I learned about the history of the local brick industry and the labourers who made them. While a community of workers from China were brought over to the island there is no trace of their individuality or sense of them ever having lived on the island. I photographed 100 brick fragments from Brickyard Beach to consider the ways that we think about materials and the ways that they are made and used. While I was unable to bring physical bricks back to the studio, I have been playing with ways to build and unbuild this local colonial history through the serigraph process.
